Xvid is a powerful type of video compression. This is called a codec. There are lots of codecs. Microsoft doesn't put Xvid on a computer cause they are too busy competing with their own video compression file types. This came out first and is obviously the new and best video compression codec. It's an offspring of Divx, which started charing for theirs a few years ago. This is used a lot on videos that are shared or downloaded on the internet these days. Virtual Dub is an amazing program! It will let you manipulate video files in ways you never thought possible, and for free. You can splice, edit, cut, you know all that good stuff.. PLUS you get full control of all your audio and video codecs. For those that don't know, a codec is just a name for the file that tells your computer how to decode or show you the video.. or let you hear the audio. It's like a language just for that type of video. Xvid is my personal favorite codec. Some man wrote the code for that codec and if a video is encoded with that codec then your computer has to have that codec in order to know how to play it back. So, say you have a file off your web cam or video camera and you want to compress it for the internet BUT preserve quality. Just get this program. Make sure you have downloaded Xvid also. Then in Virtual Dub you open the video you want to compress.. select the appropriate audio and video codecs you want to change it to. Then let it go! It will show you it's progress while it encodes to show you if the video output is going to be larger, equal, or the same as what it originally was.
